Dancing on Thorns by Rebecca Horsfall (3 out of 10)
This novel was not one that I picked out but given to me for review. In case you think I am the Paula Abdul of book reviewers and only give positive reviews, rest assured I am more critical than that. Dancing On Thorns tells the story of a talented male dancer and his soap opera life. I didn't feel sympathetic towards any of the characters and thought the book was too long. The theme of the artist who sacrifices intimacy for his work is not new and this book did not add anything.

I know, I'm splitting hairs. Indulge me.
I think the second definition (I'm using the Oxford Eng. dictionary, btw) of "critic" applies more to what you're doing here:
One skilful in judging of the qualities and merits of literary or artistic works; one who writes upon the qualities of such works; a professional reviewer of books, pictures, plays, and the like; also one skilled in textual or biblical criticism.

Being a critic, in other words, doesn't mean that you go out of your way to look for the bad in a work; it just means that you acknowledge a work's strengths and weaknesses. Which, from the reviews I have read, you do rather well.

Hey. I was given DANCING ON THORNS for Christmas by a friend, and to say that this book was litle less than brilliant would be disgraceful. I was captured by the charactures and often found myself wrapped in the story. It truly ws an amazing book.
