Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
I just finished Jane Eyre and was impressed with its feminist heroine. I won’t presume to review it like the other books but thought instead I would offer why Jane is so great.
Why Jane is my Hero.
• Jane’s antidote to self pity is learning.
• Jane knows that the true test of character is during times of greatest temptation.
• Jane values substance over appearance.
• Jane is completely honest with herself.
• Jane is a role model of self reliance and self determination, despite living in the nineteenth century.

Jane Eyre was my favorite book for 10 years. Now, it's my second favorite. Have you read it before?
Adrienne, what is your favorite book now?
Doesn't this picture of Charlotte Bronte remind you of Uma Thurmond?
Now my favorite book is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. After I got over my teen angst years, I could appreciate a nice subtle book like P&P. Jane Eyre was good for teen angst. I used it when I worked with delinquent teen girls. Go figure.
Actually, the picture looks more like Rachel Dratch from Saturday Night Live, to me. Hmmmmm.
I agree with your review: the book is all about the spirit of the woman in a (relatively) backward age. It is a great social commentary!
If you want to know, my favorite classic by miles is Frankenstein. If you haven't read it, be aware that it is not what you will think it is - it is also a social commentary, albeit incredibly forward-looking.
Quite effective material, lots of thanks for the article.
